Summer Research Internship Program

Frequently Asked Questions

ELIGIBILITY

Q: I am a freshman OR senior, can I apply to the program?
A: Yes. The program is targeted at college sophomores and juniors, but any undergraduate student can apply. Students who will have graduated by the time the internship begins are not eligible.

Q: How do you define Underrepresented Minority?
A: You should classify yourself in the same category you selected on your college entrance application. For the purpose of this grant funded program, the National Science Foundation identifies the following racial/ethnic groups as Underrepresented Minorities: African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Pacific Islanders and Puerto Ricans.

Q: What is the difference between Race and Ethnicity?
A: Persons whose ethnicity is identified as Hispanic or Latino may be of any race and, therefore, are classified by ethnicity as well as by race.

Q: If I was awarded an Internship and changed my major from a STEM field to a Non-STEM field, am I still eligible?
A: No. The guidlines set forth by the National Science Foundation requires all students to be STEM majors during their enternship.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Q: Should I wait for my references to complete the recommendations and submit the entire application together?
A: No. You can send your part of the application separately. Make sure you complete the first part of the Recommendation Form before you give it to your references and remind them of the deadline date.

Q: Should the person I choose as a reference be someone who teaches in my field of research interest?
A: This is not required but it is preferred. Select references who know your academic abilities the best.

Q: Does the faculty member have to be a member of the institution where I am enrolled?
A: No. The recommendation can come from any faculty member or research scientist at any institution, preferably one you have worked with in your field of interest.

Q: For the recommendations, do advisors count as faculty. Or, are you looking specifically for professors?
A: We recommend that you seek recommendations from professors because they are more knowledgable of your academic achievements.

TRANSCRIPTS

Q: Do I have to ask the Registrar to send the transcripts to me, so I can forward them to you?
A: No. You can have the Registrar send your transcripts directly to the Ohio Alliance office address on the application instructions.

RESEARCH

Q: How many schools may I select?
A: All or as many as you prefer. Individual campus programs start and end dates will be posted on this site.

Q: I have more than one area of interest, should I include them all?
A: Yes. Please provide as much information as you can to aid the institutions in the selection process. It is also best to be as specific as possible, in order to appropriately match you with a faculty mentor.

Q: When does the internship begin and end?
A: The start and end dates of your internship varies by school. It depends on when classes are over for Spring Quarter/Semester. Speak with your OSEA campus contact for more specific details.

Q: Am I required to come to the Research Forum at the end of the Internship?
A: Yes. All interns re required to participate in the Ohio Student Research Forum at the end of the program. Each participant will present a poster describing the research project that he or she worked on during the summer.

INTERNSHIP OFFER AND ACCEPTANCE

Q: When can I expect to hear from the institution(s)?
A: The first round of offers will be made in March. Offers will continue to be made under all the
positions have been filled.

Q: How long do I have to accept an offer?
A: Students who receive an offer have approximately two weeks in which to respond. Please pay close attention to the dates and details in your letter of offer.

Q: Once I accept an offer, can I change my mind and go to another institution?
A: Once you accept an offer from an institution, you cannot accept any other offer. If you are considering multiple campus programs, you may want to inform an institution that makes an early offer.
