2009 GLENN-STOKES SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP
APPLICATION AND INFORMATION FORM PROCESS


The application deadline has been extended to March 15, 2009.

Applying for the Glenn-Stokes Research Internship is a two-part process:

Part I - Online Application Submission
Part II - Submission of Support Documentation

PART I

We have outlined the steps that will help you successfully complete the application.

STEP 1 - Application Overview
Before you begin, read all of the information on this page prior to proceeding with the application. You may want to print this page for reference throughout the application process. If you have not confirmed your eligibility, please do so before proceeding.

STEP 2 - Application Preparation
Gather all information required for completion of Part I, the online application, by first reviewing the application and determine what you will need to complete the form. Items include:

1) Personal Information
2) Academic Information
3) Citizenship Information
4) Name and addresses of two faculty members you have asked to write a letter of recommendation
5) Name and address of a faculty research mentor for your research project (optional)

Research Interest
Please give a brief two or three sentence statement that summarizes your area(s) of research interest. You will be asked to expand upon your response in the Statement of Research Interest section required in Part II of the application process.Your statement of research interest on this part of the application should be no longer than 125 words. Be sure to proofread your statement for errors prior to completing the online application.

Research Location
This section of the application asks you to indicate all institutions where you would like to be considered to do your research. You can conduct your research at any alliance institution or partner listed and you may select as many as you wish. If you are selected for the internship program, your research location will be determined by taking in consideration your choice of institution(s) and the location of the faculty mentor who will best enhance your research experience. If you are considering a graduate degree, you are strongly encouraged to include potential graduate schools among your selected institutions.

STEP 3 - Online Submission
After you complete the online application and click the submit button, a confirmation page will appear in your browser that contains all of the information you filled in. If you find that you have made a mistake or would like to make a change, click on the "Back" button in your browser and make your corrections. When you hit submit again, another confirmation page will appear to confirm you answers. If all of your answers are correct, click the submit button on the confirmation page and your application will be sent to the OSEA office. At this point, you may not go back and change your answers.

PART II

STEP 4 - Support Documentation
For Part II of the application process, gather all of the required support documentation and submit to the Ohio Science and Engineering Alliance. These documents are as follows:

1) Two letters of recommendation submitted by faculty members
2) Statement of Research Interest
3) Biographical Sketch
4) Resume
5) Transcripts

Faculty Recommendations: You are required to request a letter of recommendation from two faculty members who are familiar with your academic work and who can comment on your potential for research. You are encouraged to speak to them about the Glenn-Stokes program, why you are interested in participating, and how this experience fits into your overall academic and career goals. It may also be helpful to share your Personal Statement (Part II of the application process) with them.

Tips for getting a good letter of recommendation

Print copies of the Recommendation Form (doc) from this website and give them to the faculty members you have asked for a recommendation, either in person, by fax or by email. Follow up to ensure that they submit your recommendation by the March 1 deadline. Note:The application deadline has been extended to March 15, 2009.

Statement of Research Interest: Explain in as much detail as possible, the academic discipline and area in which you would like to conduct research, what specific research project(s) you may be interested in pursuing, how this research will contribute to the field, and why this research appeals to you. Please describe your academic and career goals and explain how participation as a Summer Research Intern will help you achieve your objectives.Consult your advisors or instructors for advice about preparing a research statement.

Biographical Sketch: Write a biographical sketch in response to the following question: “Why do you think you are a good candidate for the Glenn-Stokes Summer Research Internship?” Your answer should include evidence of intellectual achievement as well as personal attributes that would support your candidacy. If you have already been involved in a research project, please state when and where and explain your role in it. Include a description of any other academic experiences that have prepared you for this internship.

Resume: Please include education, work experience, awards, and any group memberships.This can be mailed in separately or sent as an email attachment to our office.

Please be sure to include your name, address and telephone number at the top of each of the above documents.

Transcript: You must include one transcript for each institution you have attended. Your transcript(s) should cover all courses taken through Fall 2008. Contact your school registrar's office to have a copy of your transcripts sent to: Ohio Science & Engineering Alliance, 247 University Hall, 230 N. Oval Mall, Columbus, OH 43210.
