Ohio Student Research Forum

Q: Who may attend the Forum?
A: The Forum is open to any student majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field at one of the participating Ohio Alliance institutions. Since space is limited, priority will be given to students in the following order:

1. Glenn Stokes Research Interns (academic year and/or summer).
2. Underrepresented minority students in other programs (e.g., STARS, McNair, REU, NIH Supplement, NASA), who are conducting (or have conducted) a research project in a STEM field.
3. First- and Second-Year underrepresented minority students majoring in a STEM field.
4. STEM undergraduates who have conducted research projects.
5. Undergraduates who have conducted research in any field.

Q: How much will it cost to attend the Forum? Is there a registration fee?
A: The Ohio Student Research Forum is funded by the National Science Foundation and there is no charge to attend. Although there is no registration fee, registration is required for all participants.
The deadline to register is July 22, 2009.

Q: Where will the students stay?
A: Students will stay at the University Plaza Hotel and conference Center, 3110 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43202. 614.267.7461. Rooms are not guaranteed to be available until 3:00 PM on arrival day but students will have a place to store their luggage until their rooms are released.

Q: Will students have roommates?
A: Each student will be assigned a roommate by OSEA prior to arrival.

Q: Will students have to make their on hotel reservations?
A: Since the expenses for hotel accommodations for students, faculty and staff are being paid by program funding, OSEA will make all hotel arrangements. While students will have roommates, faculty, staff and graduate students will not.

Q: Where will the Forum events take place?
A: All Thursday activities and Friday morning Breakfast will take place at the University Plaza Hotel and Conference Center. All Friday activities will take place at the Ohio 4-H Center on Fred Taylor Drive.

Q: What is the appropriate dress?
A: The Ohio Student Research Forum is a professional conference. Proper dress during the day is business casual (no shorts or halter tops) and something a little dressier (shirts and ties for the men) for dinner on Thursday evening.

Q: Am I expected to attend every session at the Forum?
A: Students are expected to arrive on time and to participate fully in all Forum activities. Students should also make a special effort to network with one another.

Q: Am I expected to present a poster at the Poster Session?
A: All Glenn-Stokes research interns are required to present a poster at the poster session as part of their internship. They are also required to submit an electronic abstract. Other student participants are strongly encouraged to present posters as well.

Q: Am I expected to give an oral presentation?
A: Glenn-Stokes research interns who are seniors are also required to present their results orally. Other students wishing to present their research should indicate their interest on the registration form. Students who are selected to present their research will by notified on July 29th.

Q: Where should I park?
A: Parking is free at the University Plaza Hotel and Conference Center. There are a number of parking spaces available at the 4-H Center. Forum guest identification sheets will be provided to those parking at the 4-H Center for placement on your dashboard.

Q: How do I know where to go once I get to Ohio State?
A: Please come directly to the University Hotel and Conference Center. All activities for the day will be held at this location except for the Informal Networking session.
