Dr. Gregory Washington received all three of his degrees in Mechanical
and Aerospace Engineering from North Carolina State University (B.S.
magna cum laude in 1989; M.S. in 1991 and Ph.D. in 1994).
Dr. Washington
presently holds the rank of Professor of Mechanical Engineering and
is the Associate Dean of Research in the College of Engineering at
The Ohio State University. His research program focuses in the areas
of modeling and control of dynamic systems. More specifically his areas
of interest include modeling and control of smart material and mechatronic
systems. During his 12 year career he has been involved in the following
applications: the design and control of mechanically actuated antennas,
advanced control of machine tools, the design and control of Hybrid Electric
Vehicles, and structural position and vibration control with smart materials.
He is internationally recognized for his work on ultra-lightweight structurally
active antenna systems and other structures that involve the use of “smart
materials”. He is the author of more than 100 technical publications
in journals, edited volumes, and conference proceedings.
Dr. Washington
teaches courses in the dynamic systems and controls area with an emphasis
in system modeling and control. He is the recipient
of numerous teaching, education, and research awards, including the
Harrison Faculty Award for Excellence in Engineering Education (2005),
the National
Academy of Engineering – Frontiers in Engineering (Invitee) (2004),
Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award (2002), OSU Distinguished Teaching
Award (2002), Lumley Research Award (2000, 2005), Ralph R. Teetor Educational
Award (Society of Automotive Engineers) (2000), The Departmental Excellence
in Teaching Award (1998-1999), the R.P. King Best Paper Award (in IEEE
Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 1998), the College of Engineering
Annual Research Accomplishment Award (1998), the OSU Engineering Advisor
of the Year (1998), the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (1997),
the NASA Summer Faculty Fellow Award (1997-1999), and the Dupont Young
Investigator Award (1998). Dr. Washington is the proud husband of wife
Nicole and father of two boys Joshua and Kaleb.
