Purpose of the Symposium

The Ohio Student Research Symposium is a venue for talented undergraduate students to present their faculty-supervised research projects and partake in various academic and professional development experiences in preparation for graduate school. The goal of this program is to maximize networking interactions, facilitate the development of an Ohio Alliance community of scholars, and to reinforce students’ commitment to earn bachelor’s degrees and to pursue graduate study or employment in STEM related fields.

General Format

Professional Development Workshops – Students will learn about applying to grad school, obtaining financial support, preparing for the GRE, etc. Faculty, staff and grad students are encouraged to join these discussions.

Graduate Student/Faculty Panels – Panel members from STEM backgrounds will talk about their experiences, why they decided to pursue advanced study, how to thrive and survive in graduate school, why they want to be (or like being) a professor, and the value of a mentor.

Poster Session – Students will present their research at the poster session. They will be required to be at their poster for an hour and fifteen minutes and may visit the other student's posters during the session half when they are not presenting their research. All Glenn Stokes students are required to present a poster. Others are strongly encouraged to present a poster.

Oral Research Presentations – Glenn-Stokes seniors are required to present the results of their research orally on Friday. Other students are also invited to present their research, but since time is limited, selection of presenters will be made on a competitive basis.

Networking Activities -students are taught the proper way to network with their peers and departmental faculty in social settings. The techniques that are taught helps students get beyond the apprehension of initiating a conversation, build relationships and create research and professional opportunities for themselves.
