The Alliance
is a coalition of fifteen
universities working in collaboration with federal, state,
and community agencies to double the number of underrepresented
minority students who earn bachelor’s degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics (STEM) fields and to encourage
more of our degree recipients to pursue graduate study in these
fields.
This goal
will be accomplished through the implementation of a comprehensive
and integrated series of recruitment and retention initiatives
that address key transition points from undergraduate recruitment
through preparation for graduate school.
Objectives
-
To
increase the proportion of underrepresented minority student
participants in campus- or community-based pre-college and
access programs, who subsequently enroll in Ohio Alliance
institutions.
-
To
increase the number of admitted students who attend STEM
bridge programs - either at their own institution or at a
nearby Ohio Alliance institution.
-
To
retain minority students in eligible
STEM fields, prepare them to engage in research opportunities
as undergraduates, and stimulate their commitment to complete
the undergraduate degree.
-
To
enlarge the pool of minority STEM students with research
experiences as undergraduates, and prepare and motivate an
increased number of these students to pursue advanced study.
-
To
accelerate the socialization process and reinforce each student's
commitment to earn a bachelor's degree and to pursue graduate
study or employment in a STEM related field.
-
To
facilitate the adoption of effective recruitment and retention
programs and practices by Ohio Alliance faculty and staff.
